Description

The Brown Antechinus ,also known as the Stuart's antechinus and Macleay's marsupial mouse. Is a carnivorous marsupial from the family Dasyuridae. Their size varies from 9.5 cm to 11cm, while their tails are about 10 to 12cm long. They are nocturnal creatures and reside in the trees making them arboreal. Natives to Australia in the Great Dividing Range to Queensland. Antechinuses are a semelparous meaning they only breed once in their lives. Now for the good stuff, during the breeding season around August-September, the male can spend up to 12 hours to make sure for a successful impregnation. To do so, males stop getting vital proteins and suppress their immune systems to be able to accomplish such a feat. After the deed is done the males die from their exhaustion soon after the breeding period. The females can store sperm up for three days in a sperm-storage crypts in the ovary and do not ovulate until the end of the breeding season. They have 4 to 10 teats on each female, which is where the young attach themselves because the females do not posses pouches (unlike most marsupials.) Sadly most female antechinuses die soon after weaning their young. But Antechinus babies can weigh as little as 4 grams and are some of the smallest Australian native animal babies.

Although personally I was rather annoyed by how little information they had. But I must admit I had never heard of these creatures until I was looking for something to make for :iconnationalyarnographic: and found this guy on a list on Cracked:[link]. But I have grown found of them but also annoyed how often I got Agile Antechinus up with Brown Antechinus. But I also found this project rather difficult because I wanted to make it the correct size. I must also admit that I'm not completely happy with it. I feel it looks to rat-like, less shrew like then I wanted. But I still love this little guy, which is 9 cm from nose to bum and his tail is 10 cm long.

I used Bernat's Pipsqueak Yarn for the brown, and left over pink yarn for his ears and feet but use Vanna's Choice in Dusty Rose.
15mm black eyes
